Did I just go back in time? This was very old style Newgrounds and I liked it, more than I probably should. Loved the silliness and the sound effects. The death was a bit much, but maybe you reallllllly like The Simpsons. I'm gonna go with that.

Hey that was pretty cool. I liked the way you designed the battle, especially the first SWING from the baddy. Really timed well. The music sets the tempo of the fight and it has a nice natural flow. I felt every sword swing was meaningful and not just there for show (as most flashy battle scenes are) and the axe to the head was good, instead of through the heart or some stupid bleeding out shit. My only gripe is the final design of the characters, especially the Elf, he felt unrefined and could've done with a nice polish. I have to ask, was this based on Zelda? It feels like the hypothetical of what actually happened, before the story was blown up into a ridiculous legend!

Ghosty22 responds:

It wasn't really based on Zelda, I guess... However, when the first Zelda game came out, because everything was pixelated, and the sounds were very primitive, it left a lot to the imagination. Before any of the Zelda sequels came out, you had to imagine what the world would be like when un-pixelated. I kinda wanted to make an animation series about what I imagined the Zelda universe to be like, before the sequels fleshed it out with their own characterization and additions to that universe.

I didn't really want this main character to be that much like Link. I wanted to use my own, grittier character. Later incarnations of the Zelda series always seem a little too "cute" for me. I wanted to make a fantasy story that was gritty, weird, and mysterious. This is only this first episode, though. I don't have a lot of free time, but I will continue this as soon as I finish a few other things. I don't plan to parallel the Zelda universe at all. This should be the only episode that will resemble that game.

Not bad, I laughed, but it sort of has a rather anticlimactic ending. I was hoping for something more. I'm trying to imagine this except from Bowser's point of view...I would imagine going down the same way. "Oh shit, he can shoot fire too? Aw hell, I'm outta here, onto another castle and another princess."

After watching this 2 weeks after I made it I can see why people would think is lame, but that's okay. Every flash movie that I make is an experience that I get to evolve from and learn from. I'm terrible at making scripts, but hopefully as I continue making animations like this regularly I will be able to improve a lot more. Thanks for the review! Really appreciate honest opinions! :)

The stop motion/puppet stuff was excellent, great designs (even if that guy was downright ugly, very well defined) Also the lighting and use of space was good, I would even say professional looking. Certain times it made me think of Laika actually. (Boxtrolls, Coraline) I wanted to see so much more of THAT type stuff, but used for a different story.
This story, unfortunately, was just so dull I didn't care for it. And then of course, it needs to be said: the video clips you used (some of which you can't possibly own, like the Bambi clip) really cheapened the quality of the movie. Almost felt like an inside joke like..."let's put all this effort into the stop motion, and then throw in all this crap at the end when we're finished animating." It was sorely a sorely dissapointing effort, and if I was your teacher, I would seriously cross examine why you made certain (questionable) decisions after it had such a great lead up. Oh well.

This was well written and the animation was MOSTLY good. There's no question you were trying to emulate Ren & Stimpy...from the exaggerated pauses, the bloated and stifled facial expressions, and overall the pacing of their dialogue. Highlights for me were the figurine being engulfed by his entire manboob, and when the girl says "hi" and the dork starts screaming. I also liked the backgrounds you used...very abstract and representative of their mental states (which are somewhere beyond the normal states) I feel like you missed several opportune moments throughout for particular sound effects that could have enhanced some of the visual gags more, particularly when he's in the basement on the computer, and when they're following the girl. Also some of your drawing skills are lacking (not sure if that was an intentional style or if you really can't draw, like the car for instance WTF) Keep up the good work though. I'd like to see more of these, although don't take the story where you'll later regret. (you know what I mean) There's a limit with these things.

Am I the only one bothered that there's no animation of the mouths to go with the voices? Also, why are your trees shaped like lemons? As for the movie, I think you have to be a mental midget to actually chuckle at this, or someone who doesn't pick up after their dogs(you jerks!!). But the animation was ok....all 22 seconds of it.

Donkeyhorse responds:

What did mental midgets ever do to you?!

At least it's not a parody or rehash of something, and it had an interesting visual style(I actually really like mixtures of different visual mediums and stop motion) Sadly, nobody will remember this in a few hours. I'm also glad it was only 2 minutes, as it just went nowhere and nothing really meant much to me. At no point during watching this did I get a sense that it was about social exclusion, begging or hate. Those three words just seem like words you came up with after the fact, just to give it some meaning where there was none. To be honest, it just leaves me confused and wondering why you'd make something like this. But that's why it's experimental...we all have our own interpretations.

This is a perfect example of style over substance. I really liked watching it to see what kind of stuff you came up with, but I feel the substance of it all was really lost. I know I know...what am I expecting? Shakespeare with class notes? No, but I feel like the doodles were very random and the product of just killing time, and not a product of thought or anything meaningful. Of course that's just what I thought, and maybe I'm asking for much more than just to be entertained. But even at a mere 5 minutes, I really strained hard to keep watching. But, at least you had fun and it's getting shown and recognized in different outlets, so I commend that fact. I look forward to whatever else you make though. If you can stay focused enough to see this whole project through to the end, you must be really dedicated.

I saw the other wolf videos you made and I have to say, this is a major improvement. I'm sure you've heard the spiel already...practice, practice....animate and animate. It's a hard process and very time consuming, but it all pays off later. I think this animation could take even more polish and a whole lot more work (and I would encourage you to work at it and make this animation the best you can make it) My only other gripe is with the audio...which is pretty important considering its what you're lip-syncing and animating to...not only does it sound like a lo-res sound sample, but it's just not...very good, on a narrative standpoint. I'm gonna guess its a Jekyll and Hyde production of some sort. Well, I just couldn't really follow what it was all about, and that frustrated me watching this, cuz you put alot of work into it. I think there are so many other "good self vs dark self" songs you could've used. Keep it up though, you're getting better!

I commend you for trying your hand again at Flash, after all these years. This is NOT how you do it. I want you to make some original stuff, not GG or audio conversation stuff. Actual. Written. Produced. Voice Talent recorded. Stuff. Go.
